Morriston proved a tough nut to crack with a strong forward display but Dunvant came away winners 40-12 with a flurry of tries in the second half

Dunvants 2nds first Friday night fixture of the year saw Morriston visit Broadarce. The pitch was in excellent condition and the air was still with mist gathering as the night fell in. Perfect rugby conditions. The referee for the evening was Andy Williams, ex-Wales international and Dunvant player, who let the game flow for both sides. Which resulted in an entertaining game.

Dunvant had the lion’s share of possession for the first 10mins, however the Morriston defence was strong. Though is was Tom Gigg who unlocked it and went over for the evenings first points which was converted by Dannie White. Morriston then had their turn with the ball and pressured the Dunvant line with ‘up the guts’ rugby which was becoming very effective. The visiting team eventually got the rewards and went over for an unconverted try bring the score to 7-5.

Morriston’s strong scrummage, ruck and direct style was stifling Dunvant, however after a midfield penalty, Scrum Half Tom Cogram took the initiative with a quick tap which got him behind the Morriston defence. Cleverly waiting for his support Tom slipped the ball to Full Back Nick Maestri who showed great pace to run in from just outside the 22 for Dunvant’s second try. Dannie again converted and the score move on to 14-5. Dunvant’s excellent line out work from Rhys Barrow and Morgan Bevan were helping Dunvant retain some possession. However, with the Morriston scrum now dominating and them winning the battle around the ruck area in both attach and defence, resulted in pressure mounting on Dunvant. After a good passage of play Morriston eventually scored a deserved second try. With the added 2 points this brought the score to 14-12 at the break.

The only change during the turnaround was Jack Duffy for Morgan Bevan in the second row. The biggest change in the second half was Dunvant’s aggression around the ruck which reduced the effectiveness of Morriston’s pick and drive game with some good work from the back row of Ben Garrad, Michael Mizzi and Scott McGregor and some big hits from Prop Ceri Davies.

The game was in the balance but the heavy Morriston Pack were tiring. Sam Crowley broke the stalemate with a familiar break 20 yards out, cutting an angle in midfield and running over under the posts unchallenged. The easy conversion widened the lead to 21-12. Scott McGregor left the field on the 60 mins mark to make way for Jamie Fletcher making his first appearance this season. Shortly after this both Cameron Lewis and Steve McMorran entered the game replacing Lesly Cole and Huw Samuel. With fresh legs on the park and now starting to getting the upper hand in the scrummage Dunvant enjoyed more possession and were starting to stretch the game. The first of 3 tries coming in the final 20 mins went to Dunvant’s Captain Michael Arnold who took the ball off a set move from the scrummage and cut through under the posts. The next was made by another superb run from Nick Maestri, who had an impressed game at Full Back, the run carved the visitors open and off loads to Sam Crowley then to Ceri Davies resulted in another 7 points adding to the score line. The final try saw a length of the field run be Dannie White who chipped the defender on the half way line to win the race to the try line and round off a great night for Dunvant 2nds

It was great to see strong numbers and even better to see the team perform well against a dogged and strong Morriston outfit. It is back to the League next week with another home game against Maesteg Quins.
