Well, I know that is the wrong song title to describe the evening of Thursday 16th May, when a 28 strong selection of the Dunvant Rugby Club Singers visited our club, but it certainly aptly describes the feeling of everyone who attended the evening.
Oh what a night! - Well, I know that is the wrong song title to describe the evening of Thursday 16th May, when a 28 strong selection of the Dunvant Rugby Club Singers visited our club, but it certainly aptly describes the feeling of everyone who attended the evening. Not only did we have opportunity to listen to our own Newcastle Golf Club Choir, but we had the added pleasure of hearing those rich South Wales voices singing a selection of songs and hymns, including among others ‘You raise me up’, Land of my fathers’ and ‘Can’t help falling in love’ to name just a few.
Glynn and our own choir started off the evening with 3 songs and this was followed by the Dunvant singers also singing 3 songs, and then each choir alternating in turn.
Master of ceremonies for the visiting choir was a gentleman called Dai Vaughan, and what a fantastic entertainer he proved to be. A man with a very slight speech impediment, he made fun of his condition, told loads of clean but very funny jokes, and generally enthralled and entertained us all with tales of the choir on their various outings around the country.
When Dai had finished speaking from the front, he would join the choir to sing in it, so there was no one conducting, just John Davies on keyboard and all the choristers sang without the aid of music sheets or words to crib from.
Marvellous, marvellous music!
The meeting of choirs came about by Keith and Kath Beresford meeting Dai Vaughan on a Celebrity cruise ship, and the rest as they say is history. David Sampson
