Dunvant "Old Gits" put on a scintillating display of slick passing and running rugby against Tondu 3rd's at Broadacre.

What a night of nostalgia at Broadacre on Friday night. Dunvant "Old Gits" turned out in force to demonstrate they still have loads of class remaining from when playing in the top flight of Welsh rugby in the 90's. They were ably supported by some of our current "Vets" who are still playing today for our Firsts and Seconds.
The game kicked off later than expected but it was well worth the wait.
After only 4 minutes, Mark Thomas (10) went over for the first try which he duly converted. Three minutes later the forwards showed they were not to be outdone by the backs and Danzi Niblo at Lock forward scored a try for 12-0.The forwards continued with another try on 23 minutes from Jamie "J.R." Richards (9) for 19-0. Playing 30 minutes each way, Dunvant scored again right on the stroke of half time with Mark Thomas scoring his second try for 24-0.
In the second half, Tondu were showing they were not there to make up the numbers, and scored a try wthin 6 minutes which was converted for 24-7. Tondu were getting a little feisty and a few handbags started to appear. When one Tondu player slapped Mark Thomas in the face, and the Ref said "It doesn't matter", Mark Harris said "Yes it does" and returned the slap with interest.Dunvant's backs started to show their form with some dazzling breaks, particularly from Mike Smith, who was rewarded with a try on 51 minutes for 29-7. Dai "Spewsey" Hughes at full back was gutted to have a try disallowed, but Tevita "Tevi" Manusitava at inside centre scored a try only 3 minutes later for 34-7. The last score of the evening on 68 minutes went to Dai "Flower" Howells for a final score of 39-7.
It was a fantastic evening of vintage rugby, and it was great to see other old stalwarts such as Richie Llewellyn, Lee Glover, John Bowden, Ceri Thomas, Richie "Barbarian" Greenwood, Gavin Davies, Mark Perdue and Alan Rose also playing their part.Apologies to any names left out.
The festivities continued in the bar, where "Elvis" was playing some of his DVD collection of our games in the top flight. When the bar eventually closed in the early hours, some wanted even more more and ventured up to the Commercial Inn, Killay to carry on drinking until 4.00 a.m.
Our thanks go to Tondu for provividing some good opposition, for bringing a good crowd of supporters, and joining in the Clubhouse festivities long after the game finished. Our return match is at Tondu on 5th February.
The Dunvant "Old Gits" next game is against Eastleigh Vets in Southampton on 21st November. This game is a memorial match in memory of Michael Whitecross , who along with father Keith and brother Colin contributed much to Dunvant R.F.C. over the years.Should be a great trip!!
