Colin Butler - A Club Tribute

Dunvant RFC27 Feb - 01:09

Tribute from former club captain Dai Morris

Today our former youth team captain and senior player Colin Butler who passed away at the age of 54 will be laid to rest at Llanelli Crematorium, the service commencing at 1.00pm.
Colin who started his rugby career with the juniors, captained the highly successful youth side winning both the league and cup under the coaching of John Watkins and Stuart Jones before moving into the West Wales Section A winning side.
Here he is pictured with Dean Charles, Gavin Davies, Malcolm Jones, Brian Thomas and John Bowden with Gareth Nutt providing the refreshments after a match.
His club captain at the time, Dai Morris has sent the following tribute.
I first came across Colin when he was playing for Dunvant Youth. You could see there was something special about him and that he would have a great rugby career ahead.
When he made his senior first team debut, we were playing in Section A of the West Wales Championship, the best breeding ground for up-and-coming youngsters. Here he learnt his trade against some of the hardest opponents possible, mostly ex first class players and Colin more than held his own and thrived in this environment.
As his Captain I could not ask for a better teammate, he hardly ever missed a training session, gave 110% on the pitch and turned into one of the most skilful and toughest back row players Dunvant ever produced.
One of my favourite memories was the game against Newport, our first in the top flight. Colin was everywhere that day and was a real thorn in Newport’s side and deservedly won Man of the Match.
It’s an honour to call Colin a teammate and friend. RIP

The club will be open after today's service.
