With only 7 games left to play, Dunvant knew that every point is vital to their promotion challenge and they need to continue their excellent unbeaten home form this season. Dunvant were forced into a late team change on the morning of the game when Outside Half Dickie Lewis, a Wales Deaf International, had to cry off as wife Lucy had gone into labour for the birth of their first child. Dickie was replaced at 10 by Aled Lewis.
The game kicked off with Tumble playing with a very strong wind behind them, and within 2 minutes, Dunvant were shocked when the Magpie’s outside half James Owens put an excellent chip kick into open space for right winger Nicky Allinson to score their first try. The try was converted by full back Stephen Hewitt for a Tumble lead of 0-7.
Dunvant fought back five minutes later when a great break from outside centre Danny Davies saw the ball passed to winger Adam Williams who scored in the right hand corner. With the strong wind in his face, outside half Aled Lewis was unable to secure the conversion. Only 2 minutes later, Tumble were awarded a penalty for hands in the ruck about 25 metres out and Steven Hewitt kicked it over for a Tumble lead of 5-10. Again, shortly after, with only 14 minutes played, Dunvant won a penalty for offside about 15 metres out, and Aled Lewis closed the score to 8-10. Dunvant mounted several attacks and after much pressure won another penalty for Aled Lewis to take Dunvant in to the lead at 11-10 with 30 minutes gone. A great break by Dunvant out of their 22 and into the opposition 22, with advantage given for a high tackle gave us another opportunity to score but we knocked on and the chance was gone. With half time approaching, Tumble were awarded a penalty for hands in the ruck, which they kicked to touch for a five metre lineout. As play continued, Dunvant flanker Jon “Trigger” Arnold was yellow carded for hands in the ruck again. Tumble then took two more scrums against our 7 man pack and flanker Kevin Melly was able to score a try in the corner, converted by Stephen Hewitt for an 11-17 lead as referee Mark Baker blew for half time.
From the restart, Dunvant , now with the strong wind behind them and still with “Trigger” in the sin bin, won a penalty on the 22 which Aled Lewis kicked for 14-17. Aled Lewis then drew the scores level at 17-17 with a penalty kick in front of goal for hands in the ruck, and only 3 minutes later Aled scored a superb drop goal for Dunvant to lead 20-17.On the 60 minute mark, Dunvant kicked the ball ahead and No 8 Mark Loughlin was able to run in for our second try, converted by Aled for 27-17.Dunvant were now in control and Aled put a superb chip kick into space for winger Adam Williams to score in the right hand corner, unconverted, for 32-17. 5 minutes later, with Tumble mounting an attack near our 22, winger Adam Williams intercepted a short pass, ran on and kicked ahead for the wind to take it into touch for a 5 metre Tumble lineout on Tumble’s try line. The lineout was given not straight, Dunvant won the scrum, moved the ball across to the left, brought it back to the right with some slick passing, and lock forward Lloyd King was able to score our bonus point try. Aled missed the conversion but Dunvant had a healthy lead. Dunvant lock forward Jaen Botes was announced as ‘Icon Hairdressing Dunvant Man of the Match’, and as the game entered added time, again some superb passes among the back line enabled winger Greg Davies to dive over for our 5th try, Aled converted, and the referee whistled for full time. 44-17, a bonus point win, still unbeaten at home this season, and a host of delighted, players, supporters and sponsors were able to celebrate in the bar. The collection made on behalf of the Welsh Guards in Afghanistan Appeal raised £146-thank you all who contributed. Finally, I am delighted to report that Dickie Lewis, on his birthday, became the proud father of 7lb 12oz Amelia Eve, Congratulations to Lucy and Dickie, Mother & Baby are doing well.
