Dunvant team with injuries from last week’s bruising encounter saw Prop Rory Henderson, formerly of Ballymena R.F.C. starting with his debut appearance and Dunvant Youth player Josh Morgan making his 1st XV debut from the bench. Congratulation to both players on their debuts, particularly Rory whose outstanding performance won the Dunvant Rugby Club Singers Man of the Match award.
Dunvant kicked off in driving rain and were dominating territory and possession from the start. A great break after 8 minutes saw left wing Adam Williams-Parry taken out preventing a clear scoring opportunity for the referee to run under the posts to award a penalty try which Adam converted for 7-0. On 16 minutes, Dunvant looking to have space outside were penalised for a forward pass on the 10 metre line and from the scrum Mumbles were able to make an attack into Dunvant’s 22 which then won a penalty. Mumbles chose to kick for the lineout, and with the maul formed pushed over for Captain Leigh Perrett to score. Inside centre Greg Davies missed the conversion so 7-5 to Dunvant. 5 minutes later, Mumbles took the lead when Greg scored a try to the right of the posts, missed the conversion but Mumbles ahead 7-10. Dunvant then had a long passage of play in Mumbles territory and eventually Mumbles conceded a penalty which Adam kicked to draw the score level at 10-10. With the final play of the half Dunvant were awarded another penalty about 35 metres out which Adam stroked over for a half time lead of 13-10.
With the teams out for the second half, the restart was held up for 5 minutes whilst referee Richard Brace received treatment for an injury. The first 15 minutes was pretty boring from both sides, neither looking like adding to the score but then Dunvant mounted another period of pressure in Mumbles 22 leading to a number of penalties and Mumbles being warned by the ref. Dunvant took a scrum in front of the posts for outside half Richard Lewis to score next to the posts, converted by Adam Williams-Parry to put us two scores in front at 20-10. It was almost 30 minutes before Mumbles got a chance to kick a penalty goal which Greg missed from 35 metres and the next score again went to Dunvant when from a scrum the ball was passed out wide to right wing Tom Davies to score although Adam failed with the touchline conversion attempt so 25-15. With about 10 minutes left, Mumbles mounted an attack looking likely to score when replacement Lee ‘The Wasp’ Tucker took one for the team to visit the sin bin. With Dunvant down to 14 men Mumbles then had the advantage and broke through for right wing Luke Thomas to score, Greg converted for a final score of 25-17. It was also great for both sets of supporters to see the legendary James ‘J.R.’ Richards make his umpteenth return to league action at the ripe old age of 42. Well done J.R.
Dunvant march on to round three which will be played on Saturday 13th December, the draw will be announced on Wednesday. Next up for Dunvant on Saturday is an away game to Trebanos who moved up to 2nd in the league table today with a 33-20 victory of Bonymaen.
