Dunvant Rugby Club Singers Man of the Match : 1 Robbie Morris
With several Cwmllynfell players at a wedding, Cwm had to dig deep and found 2 massive JCB earthmovers for their front row, a stern test for Dunvant’s pack. Dunvant made a late change to the subs bench with James ‘J.R.’ Richards coming onto the bench for his half century of comebacks from retirement to replace Tom Williams.
Dunvant kicked off supported by a 15-20 mph wind and almost immediately were awarded a penalty in front of the posts, kicked by outside half Adam Williams-Parry for a 3-0 lead. On 7 minutes, Cwm were penalised for not releasing and again Adam slotted the penalty for 6-0. Then an initial break by outside centre Sam Crowley took Dunvant close, the ball was recycled to Adam who passed to inside centre and Captain Mitchell Ford to run in under the posts for 13-3 with Adam gaining the conversion. Dunvant almost had another try when from a penalty on the 10 metre line, kicked to touch for a 5 metre line out and maul where lock Nathan Vaughan was held up on the line. Cwmllynfell blew a chance to score and Dunvant blew two more before Cwmllynfell got on the scoreboard with a penalty goal from outside half R. Williams. Dunvant blew yet another chance to score just before the half time whistle so 13-3 at half time.
Cwmllynfell kicked off with the wind in support and were themselves unlucky to not score with a scrum and the powerful JCB’s grinding forward for a pushover try but conceded a penalty. Chopsing caused the penalty to be reversed and R. Williams slotted over for 13-6. Then the forecast blizzard arrived with a 30-40mph wind and driving rain leaving Dunvant little chance of kicking the ball.
One kick on the 22 to touch turned right round and landed back in the dead ball area. From the scrum the JCB’s drove over for No 8 M. Owen to score but Williams missed the conversion so 13-11. On 60 minutes with the storm still at full blast Cwm blew another chance to score, but then won a penalty in front of goal for Williams to put Cwm in the lead at 13-14. On 65 minutes the JCB’s were at it again and a second try from No.8 M.Owen took the score to 13-19 and you couldn’t see how Dunvant were going to get out of that given the conditions.
Thankfully, with 10 minutes left the conditions improved dramatically and Dunvant found their Broadacre never say die and determination . Firstly some terrific play from Aled Lewis, now playing at 10 put winger Tom Davies over for a try in the right hand corner, unconverted to bring us back within a point at 18-19. Almost from the restart the same move was repeated but in the race to the try line Cwm just scraped in to ground the ball first. Then a terrific break from our own 22 saw us almost score again but the ball went forward just short of the line. Redemption came with little time left when No 8 Mark Loughlin went over, converted by Adam for what remained a final score of 25-19. Dunvant were relieved to win, disappointed to not get a try bonus. Cwmllynfell, at the bottom of the table put up a terrific performance that belies their position at the bottom of the table and must be gutted to come away with only a losing bonus point. An excellent game of rugby played by both sides in atrocious conditions.
Dunvant move up to fourth place, ahead of Kenfig Hill on points ratio with both teams on 7 wins, 37 points and 40 tries apiece, which sets it all up for a thriller when Dunvant visit Kenfig next Saturday.
Elsewhere, Dunvant 2nds scored a superb 10-36 win at Skewen with a try hat trick from Andy Price and our Youth, also playing at home, beat Gorseinon 29-5
