Match Report by Roy Bowen-Trebanos R.F.C.
A strong Dunvant side visited Trebanos on a miserable November day with a strong wind blowing in from the Atlantic and driving it up the valley. The ever present veteran loose head prop Dai Davies, with sixteen years service at the 'Ancient Borough', was on the bench for this game as 19 year old pretender Aled Humphries made his first start of the season.
Dunvant decided to play with the elements; they immediately took the game to Trebanos through their backs and only good tackling by the home team kept the score at zero, especially when the Dunvant outside centre picked a good angle and broke through the home defence but cover from Rhod Williams and Rhys Jones nullified the attack. Within one minute Trebanos were in trouble again when the Dunvant outside half Richard Lewis sent a beautifully weighted kick to the right hand corner and, with nobody at home, it took a last ditch tackle by Tom Dew and Rhys Jones to stop the right wing Adam Parry Williams from scoring and save any embarrassment for the Ancient Borough. Back came Trebanos when a Dunvant three quarter movement broke down; Kristian Jones hacked the ball on; off went Matthew Edwards and Steffan Lewis on a chase; with Lewis seemingly winning the race for a touchdown, desperate defence by Adam Parry Jones managed to scramble the ball into touch. Trebanos won the throw in 5 metres from the visitors line; Rhys Jones, Aled Humphries, Richard Davies, Sean Hopkins; all went on a charge to the line but resolute tackling from Dunvant halted the attacks; eventually scrum half Nathan Jones sent a pass to Sean Hamer; he chipped a kick to the touch line where Rhoss Jones gathered but was deemed offside and Richard Lewis sent Dunvant past the half way line with a big kick.
With 10 minutes of the game played between two committed teams and the tackling from both sides of the top quality, they cancelled each other out; there was nothing to choose between the sides. On the 12 minute mark Trebanos showed glimpses of their three quarter skills; they won a scrum on the half way line; Sean Hopkins picked up at the base of the scrum and sent a pass to Nathan Jones running down the narrow side; to Kristian Jones; to Nathan Jones; to brother Rhoss Jones but the pass was adjudged forward 15 metres from the visitors line. On 15 minutes Dunvant were unlucky not to score; from a three quarter movement the outside centre Sam Crowley (who was a thorn in Trebanos's side all game) made a half break and sent an inside pass to Richard Lewis; he chipped into the right hand corner with nobody at home Adam Parry Williams caught the ball and raced ahead; he was tackled by Tom Dew; but managed to throw it inside to the scrum half Aled Lewis who dived over for an apparent score but, unluckily, he had knocked on.
In the 18th minute Rhys Jones gathered a loose ball and made a break up field; Rhod Williams took it on; tackled; the recycled ball went from Nathan Jones; to Shaun Hamer; to Steffan Lewis; to Matthew Edwards; to Kristian Jones, who was tackled two metres short of the line. On 21 minutes Trebanos were ahead; they won a penalty in midfield on the half way line; quick thinking Nathan Jones took a tap penalty and off he went down the left hand side; he passed to Steffan Lewis; to Kristian Jones; to try poacher extraordinaire Matthew Edwards. The speedster ran inside, beating a defender, then back outside, beating another defender, before racing over in the corner. Kristian Jones missed with the conversion. As the game progressed Richard Lewis, using the strong wind, sent up some huge 'Garryowens' but Tom Dew at full back was brave under the high ball and won this psychological encounter with some good returns to touch. The Trebanos pack battled for everything at the breakdown where the competition for ball was fierce; the back row, as last week, were immense and credit goes to both sides for their fitness.
On 34 minutes the Dunvant back row combined on their 10 metre line making 20 metres of ground; then blind side Rhys Tucker sent a lovely pass to left wing Tom Davies; he raced 40 metres down the touchline leaving three players in his wake and was eventually tackled by Rhys Thomas 10 metres short of the home try line. From the ensuing Dunvant scrum, it went along the backs; eventually the outside half had no option but to chip ahead; it was caught by Kristian Jones who booted it down field clearing the danger. On 39 minutes Trebanos won a lineout on the half way line; Richard Davies secured ball and on came the driving maul; Dunvant came in at the side and Trebanos won a penalty; backchat to Mr Davies saw Trebanos encroach another 10 metres into Dunvant territory. Kristian Jones, from 23 metres to the side of the posts, missed with the penalty attempt. There was more to come in this game on 42 minutes as Trebanos transgressed at a breakdown 30 metres out; the Dunvant full back, with his blindfold on, booted over the penalty making the score 5 – 3. Mr Davies blew up on 43 minutes to complete the first half.
Half Time: Trebanos 5 Dunvant 3
With 3 minutes of the second half played, Dunvant were penalised for playing the ball on the ground in the middle of the field on the half way line; Matthew Edwards with the wind behind him kicked the penalty from 50 metres. With 9 minutes of the second half played Trebanos were unlucky not to score; they won ball from a lineout on halfway; Nathan Jones; to Kristian Jones; tackled; the recycled ball went from Jones; to Hamer; to Lewis; tackled, the ball was sent out from Jones; to prop Humphries; tackled; Nathan Jones came down the narrow side and sent a pass to Rhod Williams; to Richard Davies; off he went charging towards the try line but was tackled 2 metres short; then Rhys Jones took it on only to be tackled a metre short of the line; the recycled ball went from Jones; to Hamer; to Rhod Williams; who; uncharacteristically dropped the ball.
The game proceeded with a huge battle for the ball at the breakdown; with tackling of the top order there were plenty of battles; with both Rhys Jones and Sam Tucker playing 'stormers' for their respective teams. Within two minutes Jamie Nicholas and Sean Hopkins were yellow carded, the latter when Dunvant attacked Trebanos from a scrum down the narrow side; Mr Davies alleged the player had cause an obstruction through lazy running; ensuing in a kick for Dunvant on the 22 metre line. On 65 minutes. captain Mitchell Ford booted over the penalty to make the score 8-6 points. Dunvant came with an attack down the middle of the field but Rhod Williams, with a mighty tackle, put the ball carrier on the deck; from the ensuing ruck off went Nathan Jones to the bin for the use of feet; Trebanos, now down to thirteen men, had to weather the storm as Dunvant came with some three quarter attacks but again Trebanos's tackling was resolute, none more than tight prop Alun Dew; the quiet man, for me, is the most improved player these last couple of seasons. On 74 minutes Rhod Williams won a penalty for Trebanos at a ruck and Sean Hamer put Trebanos on to the Dunvant 22 metre line. With Sean Hopkins back on and Johnny Griffiths on for Declan Bale; Trebanos won ball at the line out; Kristian Jones, now playing at scrum half, sent a pass to Sean Hamer; then the forwards drove it on under the posts; Dunvant were caught offside and a penalty awarded. With 78 minutes of the game played, captain Rhys Thomas made a big call (I would have opted for the penalty) and went for touch. Trebanos, 5 metres out, won ball, thanks to Richard Davies; the forwards drove it on with a perfect rolling maul; they drove it over the try line with Richard Davies emerging victorious. A really good call by Twm! Matthew Edwards from out on the touchline missed the conversion.
On 44 minutes Dunvant came with a counter attack when they pinched the ball from a Trebanos rolling maul; Aled Lewis to Richard Lewis to Adam Parry Williams who went racing down the right wing, but full back Tom Dew put in a magnificent tackle to save the day for Trebanos. There were no further scores and Mr Davies blew for full time after 91 minutes.
