Kenfig Hill made two late changes to their previously announced line up with full back Craig Knight being brought into the squad, replacing M.Kennedy, and Captain C.Tossell was replaced by M.Fitzgerald promoted from the bench and Ben Clark coming on to the bench. What a decision that turned out to be.!
Kenfig kicked off but Dunvant playing with support of a strong breeze soon had the Mules in a state of shock. Within two minutes, blindside flanker Lewis Buckley cruised through the defence in the left hand corner and run in under the posts for an easy conversion foe left wing Adam Williams-Parry. 7-0 to Dunvant. Adam then scored a penalty for 10-0 after 5 minutes, and was just wide with a kick from halfway on 9 minutes . Dunvant’s next score came from hooker Ceri Davies which Adam converted for 17-0 and the Mules had seen next to no territory or possession. This woke them up a bit and within two minutes a well worked try came from the Mules, several pick & go moves and then a chip through for full back Craig Knight to score under the posts, converted by outside half N.Giles for 17-7. On the half hour, Kenfig had a penalty on half way, took a quick tap to run, Dunvant were penalised for not being 10 metres away, and Giles had an easier kick at goal to close the score to 17-10 which remained the score at half time.
Dunvant restarted the second half, this time playing into the wind. Kenfig got the first score after only three minutes for Craig Knight to cross the line near the corner and run in under the posts, Giles converted and the score was now level at 17-17. Dunvant responded immedialtely with a maginicint touch line run by right wing Tom Davies to score in the right hand corner which Adam could not convert so 22-17 to Dunvant. The Mules were soon on top of both possession and keeping Dunvant penned in their own half, any forays Dunvant did make into Kenfig’s half were repelled with long kicks back to Dunvant’s 22. On 52 minutes, with Dunvant’s put in at a 5 metre scrum near our posts, Kenfig won the ball for No 8 J. Davies to score in the right hand corner, Giles converting for Kenfig to retake the lead at 22-24, further increased by a drop goal from Giles 5 minutes later for 22-27. Dunvant restarted but again Kenfig got the ball on their 10 metre line, blitzed through the defence and from our 10 metre line had a three on one for Craig Knight to score his hat trick, Kenfig to secure a try bonus point and Giles to convert for 22-34 and Kenfig Hill definitely in command. However it all changed on 78 minutes when it looked as if Dunvant would get nothing from the game. Kenfig Hill had a yellow card which took them to 14 men for the remainder of the game and then almost immediately over on the left hand touch line. It all erupted which resulted in Dunvant player Coach Craig Hawkins being red carded and before play restarted Kenfig replacement prop E.Williams received the same and it was now Kenfig 13 men, Dunvant 14 with the game into added time.
Dunvant threw everything they had into maintaining their challenge and with seconds to spare Captain and full back Mitchell Ford broke through to score under the posts to give Dunvant a try bonus point. Outside half Aled Lewis drop kicked the conversion for a final score of Dunvant 29 Kenfig Hill 34 and a losing bonus point as well for Dunvant. Left winger Adam Williams-Parry was named as the Dunvant Man of the Match.
The downside was Dunvant lost No 8 Mark Loughlin and prop Ryan Shoemark to injury and a while out of the game maybe. Let’s hope they can make a speedy recovery, we wish them well.
Dunvant go up to 6th on try count with 8 points alongside Waunarlydd who now have a game in hand, Mumbles and Builth Wells. Next up for Dunvant is a trip 3rd placed Maesteg Quins on 14 points, just behind second placed Trebanos on try count. What a challenging season this restructured league is proving to be.
