When Seven Sisters visited Broadacre last April, they broke Dunvant’s hearts by stealing the points with the last play of the match. When they kicked off today and stormed into a 7-0 lead with a Dunvant clearance on our 22 charged down allowing flanker Ieuan Eltham to score, converted by left wing Dan Short, were they going to break our hearts again. Dunvant responded magnificently. With 6 minutes played, Dunvant wing Aled Lewis took a quick tap penalty and with Dunvant going through several attacking phases, inside centre Scott Watkins found space to run in 5metres from the corner. Full back Adam Williams-Parry‘s conversion attempt looked good but hit the post to bounce out. Seven had a penalty just outside our 10 metre line which Short missed but on 11 minutes he was successful with a 28 metre kick to widen the score to 5-10.Dunvant kept attacking with Sevens’s defence resolute and on 20 minutes Adam’s next penalty kick was successful for 8-10. 5 minutes later Dunvant kicked a penalty for a lineout and maul, the move eventually broke down but resulted in another penalty and with more of the same, kick to lineout then maul the pack forced Seven backwards for No 8 Mark Loughlin to score and celebrate the birth of baby daughter Imogen 11 days earlier. This time Adam’s conversion attempt hit the top of the right hand post to bounce off and out so Dunvant had a slender lead for the first time at 13-10. On the half hour, Seven made a break through but the kick ahead was too strong and the ball went dead in goal for a Dunvant scrum back on the 10 metre line. On 38 minutes Seven had men over when attacking on our 22 but Dunvant flanker Rhys Tucker gained possession and ran to the other end to score, Adam’ conversion was missed but we now led 18-10 which remained the half time score.
Shortly after Dunvant’s restart Seven’s centre Kyle Davies was yellow carded and with the extra man Rhys Tucker scored a brilliant try under the posts, converted by Adam for 25-10, and a try bonus point as well.. Dunvant’s Mark Loughlin then got a yellow card taking it to 14 men apiece. On the hour with Seven back to 15, 14 man Dunvant widened the score using the penalty kick to touch, lineout and maul again and then four more phases for lock forward Nathan Vaughan to score for a 30-10 lead with Adam missing the conversion. As Dunvant were back to 15 men Seven flanker Peter O’Sullivan was yellow carded for a high tackle. As Dunvant hooker Ceri Davies was named as the Rugby Club Singers Dunvant Man of the Match, scrum half Sam Gallagher conjured a try out of nowhere, converted by Adam for 37-10. With the game into added time Seven were determined not to lie down and the game was getting a bit feisty with players being spoken to by the ref. Seven’s full back Dan Norton scored consolation try although the conversion was missed so 37-15.Dunvant replacement flanker Jordan Jackson who had only just come on was yellow carded for a high tackle and then Seven’s linesman, who had been vocal towards the ref all afternoon and had already been warned by the referee ,overstepped the mark and was deservedly relieved of his flag for what time remained. Final score Dunvant 37 Seven Sisters 15
As a footnote, we welcome Osprey’s Under 18 flanker to the Dunvant family and congratulate him on making his 1st XV debut off the bench in this match.
A great win and a great display by Dunvant for the Broadacre faithful where the result and the bonus point keep us in 4th place. Next up for Dunvant is a trip to Parc-Y-Mawr to face league leaders Bonymaen. Bony, 14 points clear at the top of the table have not lost since losing 33-20 at Trebanos last October but they were very, very fortunate to escape Broadacre with a 24-25 victory on 3rd January. Rest assured, next Saturday will be a cracker.
