Half-Time: Maesteg Quins 15 Dunvant 5

With half of the regular 1st XV away on a stag do, Dunvant had to dig deep into their reserves including Vets :”J.R.” at 9 and “Trigger” at 7, with Tom Falvey Johnnie Jones, Lee Tucker and George Jupp making their first appearances of the season and prop “CWills” playing at blindside flanker.
We knew Quins would be up for this one, wanting to avenge their 32-0 defeat at Broadacre and to get their bid to finish the season as Champions back on track following two successive defeats at Maesteg 17-15 and at Trebanos 46-6.
Quins kicked off with a fierce wind blowing across the pitch which made kicking difficult all day but exerted pressure on Dunvant from the outset. Their first penalty was kicked for a 5 metre lineout from which Dunvant were awarded a scrum which was then reset and from which a penalty allowed Dunvant to clear their lines. It was 10 minutes before Dunvant got into Quins territory, couldn’t quite get to the line with a strong Quins defence, and a first penalty kick at goal failed in the strong wind. Quins then scored two tries in two minutes, both from turnover scrums where Quins were dominant, the first try going to scrum half Gareth .Lindeburn on permit from Tondu, converted by G.Lewis and the second to openside flanker S.Williams to take the score to 12-0. On the half hour with Quins attacking again, Dunvant full back Adam Williams-Parry was penalised for a deliberate knock on, his first ever yellow card destroying a record he was very proud of, and the resultant penalty kick took the lead to 15-0. Almost on half time, Quins failed with a penalty kick at goal but Dunvant had the final say from a lineout inside Quins 22, with the referee signalling 10 seconds left, and lock forward Hayden Baldwin demonstrating some great juggling with the ball powered through to score , Ben Pothecary failing with the conversion attempt for a half time score of 15-5.
Dunvant restarted the second half back up to 15 men. The game was now very competitive with both sides striving to gat the edge on the other. Quins succeeded with a penalty on 52 minutes for 18-5 and a minute later with a strong break by winger R. Lovett scored a third try, unconverted, for 23-5. Quins got their bonus point try on 65 minutes, again unconverted in the strong wind for 28-5. Dunvant were trying everything to break through with Quins defence strong and somehow just managing to avoid yellow cards and eventually Dunvant Captain Sam Crowley broke through to score, converted by outside half Ben Pothecary for 28-12. Quins fought back from the restart and a further penalty to the score to 31-12.
This was a gutsy fighting performance from Dunvant, every single one of the boys put their bodies on the line for this one, and Dunvant, who have completed their league fixtures still top of the table, are guaranteed to finish in at least 3rd place with Skewen beating Trebanos today. All we can do is sit and wait whilst Quins, 5 points behind play 5 more fixtures and Skewen 4 points behind us with 2 to play. Well done boys, we’re proud of all the boys who have played this season and really proud of the boys who put their bodies on the line today.
Dunvant however now have the bonus of a Brain’s Cup Semi Final at Ystradgynlais R.F.C. this Tuesday against Skewen, kick off is 7.00 p.m. We need the red and green army to turn up in force for this one having drawn one and lost one with Skewen in the league.
