ROGER 'TEFLON' BROWN-AN OBITUARY FOR A FORMER DUNVANT WINGER

ROGER 'TEFLON' BROWN-AN OBITUARY FOR A FORMER DUNVANT WINGER

Roger Knight5 Dec 2013 - 17:30

Dunvant Rugby Club are deeply saddened to announce that Roger Brown, a 1st XV winger in the 70's has lost a long and challenging battle with cancer.

Roger sadly passed away at the end of November, and we are extremely grateful to Robert Beynon for providing this tribute to his former friend.

Roger Brown was an enthusiastic & active member of Dunvant R.F.C. in the early 1970's at the time when the Broadacre ground & clubhouse were being developed & was a keen member of the many working parties then. He also distinguished himself in the 1st XV as a very fast & super-fit winger.Among his teamates at that time were Roger Rees, Peter Pelossi, Ernie Macey, Rein Paart, Bob Davies, Roger Slack, Huw Prosser, Colin James et al.
It is believed he still holds the record for most tries in one game touching down for 6, although due to the mists of time no-one remembers the opposition. I think Roger said it was Uplands Ladies ( 2nd ) XV, but that was typical of his self-effacing humour as was his self-appointed nickname of ' Teflon ', referring to his handling skills.
His career with Dunvant might have been longer were it not for the fact that he was a serial emigrater (once to South Africa and 3 times to Canada) but he always returned to Swansea and his beloved Gower Peninsular.

A particularly poignant event occurred in the summer of 1972 after pre-season training. Roger made his way to Heathrow Airport where he was booked onto B.E.A. flight 548 to Brussels for an assignment concerned with his work as a Structural Integrity Engineer. The 6 o'clock news that evening gave details of a plane crash at Heathrow of a flight to Brussels. Many of us, his close friends, heard this news & met in the Vivian Arms, hoping he might not have been on that flight, but fearing the worst. It was not until 10 o'clock that evening that we heard he had been transferred to the previous flight & was alive & well. All 118 on that plane perished in the crash.

Such a narrow escape would have encouraged most people to live life to the full but, in truth, he always did, never being one to stand still or be bored. He was a keen & dedicated cyclist, runner, fisherman ( complete with anglers' tales ), adventurer/traveller, model plane maker/flyer, and skilled DIY'er ( he developed a unique & characteristic method of loft insulation ) . In later years he took up the triathlon becoming one of the top triathletes in his age group in Wales.

Roger married Judy in 1976 & sons Sam & Jack followed & eventually grandchildren Jay & Phoebe. His family, including his much loved younger sister Esther, were a constant support for Roger in the latter days of his illness. His battle with cancer was an inspiration to us all, there was no self-pity or moaning and he filled all his available time with positive actions and plans. As recently as 2011 he completed the Macmillan Walk from Rhosilli to Mumbles raising money for that deserving cause.(See attached photo)

We, his close friends, shall never forget him and I know he will feature in many anecdotes when we go on our bus pass pub crawls which he enjoyed so much, not forgetting his prowess on Royal Ashleigh & Oystermouth Bowling Green.
He will be much missed but never forgotten - a unique character, loving family man and loyal friend.

Donations in memory of Roger are being made to Ty Olwen C/O St James Funeral Home, 31 St James Gardens Uplands.
