This was a game that Dunvant could and should have won. Games with Skewen always demonstrate the competitive rivalry between our teams but Dunvant were victorious in our last encounter at Broadacre in May 15 winning 29-19 and the previous home game in September 13 was a 10-10 draw.
Danny Davies led the team out to celebrate his 100th appearance for Dunvant 1st XV. Skewen kicked off and within 2 minutes were awarded a penalty 30 metres out which scrum half Anthony Buselli kicked for a 0-3 lead. Dunvant restarted and kicked straight out on the full. Shortly after Dunvant had a penalty opportunity on their 10m line but opted to kick to touch against the blustery wind. From the lineout Danny Davies broke through and looked certain to score with only 5 minutes played but dropped the ball on the line. Skewen had another penalty opportunity on our 10 metre line but Buselli was wide. Then on 15 minutes a sublime kick ahead and chase by Danny Davies saw him score under the posts, outside half Richard Lewis converting to put Dunvant into a 7-3 lead. Skewen responded with a try from right wing Matthew Billet, converted by Buselli to put Skewen 7-10 ahead. On 20 minutes another penalty from our 10metre line saw Buselli extend Skewen’s lead to 7-13, then hope for Dunvant to capitalise when Skewen left wing Mark Harvey got a yellow card. It was not to be as Dunvant Captain Mitchell Ford was carded which resulted in a successful penalty kick for Buselli for 7-16 and then Dunvant‘s Richard Lewis was carded leaving Skewen at 14 men and Dunvant 13.This rallied Dunvant into heroic efforts and on 33 minutes a kickable penalty was spurned by a quick tap penalty which failed to make any progress. However, with Dunvant still a man disadvantage Danny Davies scored another excellent try, converted by left wing Adam Williams-Parry for a half time score of Dunvant 14 Skewen 16.
The game restarted with the best spell of the game for Dunvant. On 45 minutes a penalty kick at goal from the centre spot saw Adam Williams-Parry put Dunvant in the lead 16-16, one minute later he repeated the feat with another shot from the half way line for 20-16 and 2 minutes later a 3rd successive shot from the 10 metre line saw is with a 23-16 lead. Then disaster again. Dunvant replacement scrum half Aled Lewis was carded have only just come on, Skewen kicked the penalty for a lineout and then flanker Richard Davies went over, the conversion missed for 23-21 with 57 minutes gone. With both sides back to 15 a piece it was nip and tuck, on 73 minutes Adam was just wide with a shot from out wide. On 77 minutes Skewen broke Dunvant’s heart with a successful penalty to put Skewen into a 23-24 lead. With the game into added time, Adam and Dunvant had one final chance to redress the balance with another kick from out side, yes sang the crowd only to see it drift wide. Final score Dunvant 23 Skewen 24. Dunvant having to settle for a losing bonus point. 3 yellows in a game makes it tough. Live and Learn and come back stronger. Our next two games are home to a rampant Tata Steel who beat Glynneath 57-0 and the following week we are away at second placed Pontypool who also won 50-17 against Newbridge .It doesn’t get any easier in this league!
Elsewhere Dunvant 2nds won 3020 away at Pontarddulais whilst the Youth lost 16-5 at South Gower.
