Three weeks ago, 6th placed Llanelli Wanderers outplayed Dunvant at Stradey Park in wet, muddy and bitterly cold conditions to inflict only Dunvant’s 3rd defeat of the season by 22-8. Dunvant were convinced that home advantage today would prevail………but…..with only 5 minutes played Wanderers got the first score to shock the Dunvant faithful and sow the seeds of doubt. Dunvant had a scrum 35 metres out and with the scrum collapsing, Dunvant were penalised. Wanderers took advantage and right wing Adam Thomas put Wanderers 0-5 in the lead, the conversion attempt failing. A quick huddle and pep talk then saw Dunvant on the scoreboard in 18 minutes with a penalty goal from outside half Richard Lewis followed quickly with a break by wing Adam Williams-Parry passing to Richard Lewis to score, converting his own try for Dunvant to lead 10-5. On 28 minutes Dunvant were awarded a penalty on the half way line and a quick tap saw Wanderers penalised for not 10 and Richard Lewis extended the lead with a penalty goal from the 10 metre line for 13-5. Shortly after with Dunvant attacking the try line Wanderers scrum half Osian Williams saw yellow, Dunvant kicking the penalty for a 5 metre lineout and drive to see flanker Sam Tucker score, Richard Lewis converting for 20-5. As the game moved into added time a terrific try saw the ball passed through the backs wide out to Rhodri Wall on the wing who unchallenged ran in under the posts, Richard converting for a half time score of 27-5.
Wanderers restarted the 2nd half and within 5 minutes Dunvant got the much needed try bonus point with several phases of play from the half way, flanker Sam Tucker scoring, although the conversion was missed so 32-5.
The try of the match came on 52 minutes. Wanderers were desperately trying to get across our try line and some magnificent defending saw the ball turned over, Dunvant broke out and a great chip and chase by Adam Williams-Parry saw him run in for the 5th try, converted by Richard for 39-5.Within 90 seconds Dunvant repeated the feat from our 22 when some slick passing and a break by flanker Jamie Nicholas saw replacement Gareth Cadmore score, Richard’s conversion going in off the post for 46-5. By this time Dunvant were flying with some spectacular rugby we have not seen at Broadacre in a while. On 60 minutes winger Rhodri Wall made a break running across the pitch to the right and prop Ryan Shoemark scored, converted by Richard for 53-5. Rhodri scored his 2nd try on 66 minutes with a try in the right hand corner, the conversion attempt wide so 58-5. Seconds later inside centre Danny Davies scored a try under the posts, converted by Richard for 65-5. Then on 71 minutes a break by hooker Ceri Davies saw flanker Sam Tucker get his hat trick try, converted by Richard for 72-5. In fairness to Wanderers, they battled on and scored a deserved consolation try by wing Adam Thomas, converted by full back Steffan Marshall for 72-12. On 78 minutes the icing on the cake saw our 11th try scored by Captain and full back Mitchell Ford , conversion missed, so final score 77-12. The Dunvant Rugby Club Singers Man of the Match award was given jointly by the sponsors to lock forward turned flanker today Jamie Nicholas along with outside half Richard Lewis. They also gave a special award to hat trick hero Sam Tucker.
With other results today, only Kidwelly are in now a position to deny Dunvant promotion to the Championship. With Dunvant on 79 points and 2 games to go, Felinfoel's maximum achievable is 78, Waunarlwydd's is 77 and Kidwelly if they manage to achieve 5 bonus point victories could achieve 81 points, but the celebrations are on hold until certainty prevails. If it finishes level on points then games won, followed by tries scored are brought into the equation. Currently Dunvant have 4 more wins and 25 more tries than Kidwelly.
Dunvant play away at Whitland next Saturday and have a home game to come against Waunarlwydd, probably on 7th May with a late afternoon kick off. Let’s hope we can take a large volume of supporters to Whitland next Saturday to cheer the boys on to what would be a massive achievement in Dunvant’s proud history.
