THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY!

How did we lose that? With Dunvant leading 24-8 on the hour Bonymaen won the game with a last kick penalty to stun the Broadacre faithful.

On 27th December 2008 Bonymaen came to Broadacre, our boys had been out on a Boxing Day bender the day before and suffered the consequences when Bonymaen ran riot winning 31-5. With this first game of the New Year, Dunvant were mugged again. Bonymaen kicked off and almost immediately were vying to get across our try line but we were able to clear our lines. Bony’s first chance to score came from a penalty kick at goal after 9 minutes which outside half Paul Warlow missed. Seconds later, Bony’s right wing gathered the ball on his 10 metre line and ran straight through Dunvant’s defence and passed just short of the try line to inside centre Mark Simons to score for a 5-0 lead as Warlow could not convert. This woke Dunvant up and on 25 minutes a great break down the middle by outside centre Sam Crowley so the ball worked out to the right for Captain Mitchell Ford to score, converted by Richard Lewis to put Dunvant in the lead 7-5. ON 37 minutes, with a penalty awarded on our 10 metre line, Aled Lewis put in a superb kick for a 5 metre lineout. On came Dunvant’s catch & drive, practised so well at Seven Sisters last week, the maul was pulled down and the ref ran straight under the posts for a penalty try, with a yellow card for Bony No 8 John Hyndman. Richard Lewis kicked the easy conversion for 14-5. Dunvant rounded off the half with a penalty kick at goal just inside the 22 by Richard Lewis for a half time lead of 17-5. As Dunvant restarted, Bony were awarded a penalty which looked eminently kickable but kicked to touch for the lineout. The hooker dummied the throw and Dunvant scrum cleared the threat. Bony clawed back three points with a Warlow penalty kick on 46 minutes for 17-8. A good period of pressure followed by Dunvant and from a Bonymaen throw on their 5 metre line, Dunvant won the ball and No 8 Rhys Tucker went over to score, Lewis converted and Dunvant were in control at 24-8. With around 20 minutes left, Bony woke up and started exerting the pressure on Dunvant with outside centre Paul Davies going over in the right hand corner, Warlow converting for 24-15. On 73 minutes, a melee started near halfway which resulted in Dunvant flanker Craig Hawkins and Bony prop Richard Murphy sitting out the rest of the game. Ripper felt harshly done by but it is what it is, and on 78 minutes replacement wing Tom Bevan had a clear run in under the posts, Warlow converting for a nailbiting finish at 24-22. Then Warlow thought he was over to win the game but had infringed and was rewarded with a yellow card. Bony were camped in our 22 and the inevitable happened, with the clock due, Bony were awarded a simple penalty kick which I think was kicked by Paul Davies to win the match 24-25 for Bony and Dunvant absolutely gutted at having to settle for a losing bonus point. Dunvant stay 7th with Maesteg Quins game called off, but now with 2 games in hand and 1 point below us and Builth Wells moving from 8th to 5th with a 15-13 win at Cwmllynfell. The result of the day came with Seven Sisters getting a try bonus point 29-11 win at Waunarlwydd which takes them from 12th to 9th.
Next up for Dunvant is an away trip to Ystalyfera who lost 38-7 at Skewen but whose two victories this season have both come at home including beating league leaders Trebanos 17-16.
