This was a game which saw Dunvant seeking to remain top of the table whilst Crymych, although in 9th place have played 3 fewer games and could technically be in 3rd or 4th place. Dunvant took the honours 27-9 at Crymych last October but visitors to Broadacre always want to test us to the limit. Today was no exception.
Dunvant had picked their strongest available team welcoming back wing Tom Davies after 3 months out injured which had looked like ending his career.
Dunvant kicked off towards the Dunvant end with a strong breeze in support and within 2 minutes Crymych were penalised and Dunvant outside half James Davies slotted over for 3-0.
With only 7 minutes gone, Dunvant flanker Gareth Cadmore received a surprise yellow card and he was followed to the bin 5 minutes later by Crymych lock Joseff Powell, so at least some consistency in the decisions.
On 17 minutes James slotted a second penalty from just outside the 22 and on 23 minutes a further penalty kick by James from 38 metres took the lead to 9-0. On 32 minutes Crymych hooker Carwyn Rees saw yellow and James kicked his 4th penalty for 12-0. 5 minutes later The ref evened up things again with Dunvant captain Mitchell Ford going to the bin so both sides again down to 14. Neither side so far had really threated the try line, but Crymych now moved up a gear and Dunvant had to defend desperately for the remainder of the half with Crymych’s pack twice held up on the line but the score remained ar 12-0.
Crymych came out all guns blazing in the second half and almost immediately were on the scoreboard with a try in the right hand corner from No 8 Guto Davies, outside half Rhys Davies hitting the post with his touchline conversion attempt so the score was 12-5. 4 minutes later, Crymych were awarded a penalty on the 10 metre line. Just as Rhys Davies was moving up to kick the ball fell over and with seconds remaining he picked up the ball and drop kicked the ball over the crossbar to applause from the whole crowd for 12-8. With the half hour approaching A Dunvant error in our 22 saw Crymych get unexpected possession and scrum half Rhodri Davies, who had been lively throughout the game, ran round the defence to put the ball down under the posts, Rhys Davies converting and Crymych deservedly in the lead a 12-15.
Dunvant attacked from the restart and were held up on the line. Then another attack was held up with Crymych penalised and Dunvant taking a scrum reset. I’m sure we then had some divine intervention from our match hosts, St Hilary’s Church and the Parish of Killay. Returning to Killay for the first time since moving to Kidderminster, Dunvant Chaplain Father Tim Williams, along with his with his replacement Reverend Phillip Gwynn must have blessed the Dunvant pack from the Sponsors lounge as Crymych infringed again and the referee ran under the posts for a penalty try to put Dunvant back in the lead with only 5 minutes left. Dunvant maintained the pressure and almost scored again when James Davies attempted a drop goal which was just wide. Final score Dunvant 19 Crymych 15.
Crymych must have been disappointed to leave Broadacre with only a losing bonus point for their efforts. Dunvant could breathe a great sigh of relief, not only for winning again, but on hearing that 2nd placed Felinfoel drew and 3rd placed Kidwelly had lost, increasing Dunvant’s advantage in top slot.
Elsewhere Dunvant 2nds beat Crymych 27-7 and Dunvant Youth lost 8-3 at Pontarddulais. Next Saturday sees Dunvant travel to 7th placed Gorseinon who won 15-14 at Tenby today and lost 15-20 to Crymych last weekend.
