Broadacre was the place to be on Saturday. With a W.S.R.U Under 11’s National 7’s Tournament from 10.30, our last home game for the already crowned 1 West Champions, a W.R.U aftermatch trophy presentation and then players Presentation Night followed by live band ‘Moose’.
Waunarlwydd with 5 consecutive wins and a chance of 2nd place were clearly wanting to spoil our party and were helped considerably when Waun kicked off into our 22 and our inside centre Danny Davies was red carded leaving us with 14 men for the whole game. Waun kicked the penalty to touch, lineout and driving maul and prop Chris Sealey scored, converted by scrum half Lee Evans for 0-7.Their second try came on 9 minutes from flanker Daniel Joseph, converted by Evans for 0-14. Dunvant were trying to adjust for the loss of Danny and a good period of attacking pressure saw No 8 Mark Loughlin score although Richard Lewis’s conversion attempt failed, but Dunvant on the scoreboard at 5-14 with 17 minutes played. Waun responded with a third try under the posts from centre Dan Fox, converted by Evans for 5-21 with 22 minutes played. Waun’s bonus point try came on 32 minutes from scrum half Lee Evans but his conversion attempt from out wide bounced back off the posts. Then shortly before half time, Waun had a yellow card so both sides on 14 men for 10 minutes.
Dunvant restarted the second half and were looking more solid and putting plenty of pressure on Waun., but it took 20 minutes before the next score when Mark Loughlin got his second try, converted by Richard Lewis to bring the score to 12-26.Then a strange incident, with Dunvant attacking Waun’s 22, a Waun clearance kick smacked into the referee and knocked him out cold. He was attended to by the physios and eventually groggily got up, walked around and decided he could continue. With so much publicity and concern around concussion at present and players having to go off for H.I.A., before being allowed to return, perhaps the game should have been abandoned, so all credit to the ref for carrying on. As it was the game continued and the final score went to Waun on 77 minutes with a try under the posts from wing Alan Pope, converted by Evans for 12-33 and the ref blew up for full time with no added time for his injury. Fortunately it didn’t matter as we were already Champions and well done Waun.
Post match the celebrations began with Division 1 West Champions Trophy presented to Club Captain Mitchell Ford- who has played in all our 22 league games this season, by W.R.U. District E Director and former Chairman of Dunvant RFC Geraint Edwards. The party in the club continued, followed by a season highlights video from Colin Presley, Players Presentation Night with 1st & 2nd XV awards, then live band ‘Moose’ for players, WAGs and supporters to dance the night away.
A memorable season for Dunvant R.F.C. with our first trophy since winning Division 2 West in 2005/6 ten years ago. Congratulations to our Senior Squad of players for contributing so much to our successful season. They are a close knit group who can be proud of their achievement in taking us onwards and upwards to Championship rugby next season. See you there!
Finally, a big thank you to the 1st XV Coaches Jay Parry, Gareth Williams and Craig Hawkins who have been with us on this journey for the last 3 seasons and we are delighted to confirm they will be with us next season on our journey into the Championship along with the rest of our support team.
