WOW! THAT WAS A CLOSE RUN THING

WOW! THAT WAS A CLOSE RUN THING

Dunvant fought back from a 20-0 deficit to lead 25-23 only to see a 45 metre kick by Gareth Rees snatch the victory for Kidwelly in the dying seconds.

Half-Time: Kidwelly 20 Dunvant 7

This was a benchmark game for Dunvant after a 7 year journey from Division 1 West to Division 3 and back to test ourselves against Kidwelly, who led the league for so long last season only to lose the title on try count and who were already sitting at the top this season with two comprehensive wins. Dunvant were stunned in the first half with Kidwelly running away into a 20 point lead without reply. The first points came after 8 minutes with a penalty kick just beyond the 10 metre line and an easier kick on 12 minutes when with no advantage gained, were awarded a kick almost in front for Rees to9 strike again for 6-0. Dunvant’s restart didn’t go 10 metres awarding possession back to Kidwelly but hope came on 17 minutes when Kidwelly prop Berian Watkins was yellow carded, our outside half James Davies just wide with the resultant penalty kick. Kidwelly were still dominant and on 20 minutes a break from halfway down the left wing saw lock forward Dan Morris run under the posts, converted by Rees for 13-0. Another chance for Dunvant came when a penalty given was advanced 10 metres for backchat but again James Davies was just wide. On 25 minutes Adam Williams-Parry took over the kicking duties for another penalty but again we missed from the 10 metre line. On the half hour Dunvant Captain Mitchell Ford was yellow carded for a late tackle in their 22 to give the advantage back to Kidwelly, and from a penalty where the ball had landed near our 10 metre line, Kidwelly were able to run in under the posts for their second try, converted by Rees for a 20-0 lead in only 33 minutes. And then……………finally some magic from Dunvant full back Adam Williams-Parry who broke away on the 10 metre line and outpaced the chasing opposition to run in under the posts, kicking his own conversion for 20-7 which remained the half time score.
Almost immediately from the restart Dunvant won a penalty which Adam kicked for 20-10, and three minutes later Dunvant’s pack, missing Rhys Tucker and Jordan Jackson both blood subs being patched up on the touchline with Sam Tucker and Mark Loughlin on in their place, worked a terrific score with the whole pack driving for hooker Ceri Davies to score, converted by Adam for 20-17. Kidwelly responded with another attack and a resultant penalty saw Rees widen the score to 23-17. On the hour, Dunvant again won good ball in the ruck and with a break down the left wing Mitchell Ford ran through to score in the corner, Adam’s conversion agonisingly wide but Dunvant were within a point at 23-22. On 68 minutes, Rees had another penalty kick from the 10 metre line but failed and the next score went to Dunvant on 78 minutes. A superb drive by Dunvant’s pack resulted in a penalty in front of goal kicked by Adam for Dunvant to take the lead 23-25 to the shock of the home faithful….but not for long. On 79 minutes, Kidwelly were awarded another penalty about 45 metres out and this time Rees was successful to put Kidwelly back in the lead 26-25 with seconds to go. Dunvant restarted and quickly drove their way into Kidwelly’s 22 determined to regain the lead. As the ref blew his whistle, hopefully for a Dunvant penalty, it turned out it was only a scrum so to the delight of the home crowd and the despair of the Dunvant faithful our magnificent comeback from being 20 points down was just not quite enough.
