You can say what you want on Facebook, but can you deliver, well lets just say in seems the answer is no.
The youth team game into the game having suffered a reverse on the weekend in a game which was theirs to win, obviously there are one of two choices, you fight or flight, in this game it was definetely fight, a fight for pride, a fight for our turf, a fight to get into next weeks team. Put this against a team who were very chirpy and confident and you have a battle.
From the start the district were strong trying to soften up the Dunvant defence, however with every attack the defence got stronger and the hits harder, and the backward steps from the district bigger, this did not stop all game,Dunvant tackle after tackle flattened the big runners who only invariably got over the gain line. There were big games from 1 to 22, but Dunvants backrow and second rows were rampant in the loose, spoiling and slowing up the district ball and taking our own ball up with authority.
Dunvant got an early penalty from Gareth Banfield, but it was their defence that drove the district back and loose ball was hacked up the pitch, where Ciaran Williams pounced on the ball, Gareth Banfield again converted. This was the turning point and the district did not threaten again until the last minute when a try out of the Clive Norling school of refereeing was awarded (one for turning up). Throughout the game Dunvant dominated the legitimate lineouts absolutely commanding this aspect, where Matthew Dodd was imperious, when he went off for a couple of blood injuries, the district probably thought they were going to have a respite, only for Jack Duffy to also take a few steals, in the belief that they could avoid him at the front, they progressed to the middle where Antonio Lezzi stepped up and spoiled their ball.
Left with little first phase ball, the district got ever more desperate in the second half, allowing Alistair Hewins, Alex Kirton and Antonio Lezzi to rule turning over the ball regularly, Alistair especially smashing players back for fun. Left with no option but to kick Sam Hawkes was returning kicks with interest and making breaks from deep, one such weaving run led to Jack Lee hitting an angle at pace scoring to the left of the posts, easily converted. As the game loosened up Dunvants dominanace grew, with Antonio Lezzi making a deep forage into the 22 for a sharp break from the ever present Ciaran Williams to snipe into the corner.
Again Dunvant pressed with 5 minutes to go when Morgan Hackett linked up after a loose pass to feed Matthew Dodd who fed Kandi Buka, whose finish trying to avoid getting dirty was classic in the least.
The game then fizzled out as the district were given a couple of lenient decisions.
With a break this weekend Dunvant have a chance to regroup, and get their heads focussed on next Fridays cup match, now is the time to peak, there was plenty to work on after this result, we left at least 3 trys in the changing room.
So everyone get down there and support your Youth team
And finally a big thankyou to the District Youth for bringing a team down and making the effort to help us celebrate our anniversary
