Somehow whenever a Dunvant team from Under 16's to Youth go on tour the opposition seems to think they can play players older than ours

Not for the first time we turned up to find that we were playing a team a lot older than us, however we did not expect to be playing an under 21's team, someone is taking the urine I think.
However in the past few weeks, the youth have found a toughness and a better understanding of how they need to play, and have grown a pair. when you are faced with players who have got more facial hair than Santa you need to stand up and fight, and that we did, Wicklow had players who punched at their weight and we punched well above ours. The opening exchanges saw Wicklow cut Dunvant apart however scramble defence was the order of the day, it took Wicklow 15 minutes to open the scoring but all their attacks were from deep and continued to be all game, any time they pressurised deep into our territory, we tackled our hearts out from 1 to 15, the only criticism being that we over committed in defence often flying up to be either stepped our cut on the inside. Having slipped to a 5 nil deficit, it looked like it was going to be a long day, not so though, with Ciran Williams making breaks around the fringes bringing our oustanding backrow into the game where Alex Kirton was returning from injury, and with the backs now attacking at pace and spreading the ball, the youth team were causing Wicklow problems, our set piece was working well and from a lineout 10 metres out a driving maul led to a try for Alex Kirton, who had been playing a big game and putting excellent defensive effort. However as the half drew to a close and with Dunvant pressing an interception on Wicklows 22 let Wicklow off the hook, with the centre cantering up the pitch to score under the posts. The last 5 ninutes was all out defence for Dunvant having lost Gareth Williams to the sin bin, despite our line being battered more than the wife of a Stella drinker, it was only the last move of the half that saw Wicklow score a try, half time score 19-5
Luckily for us at half time Wicklow were able to rest some of their weaker players at half time, when they bought on 5 new forwards who seemed to raise their game let alone their average age.
However the game was played in between the 22's and Wicklow scored 3 tries which can only be put down to the physical strength and size of the opposition, we however continued to tackle with ferocity and their openside flanker who looked more like a cage fighter than a rugby player was smashed everytime he had it, any time they broke through they just could not get past Sam Hawkes who tackled everything, the only time he missed was when their was a 4 on 1, Jack Duffy went off with 15 minutes to go when he got what can only be described as legally mugged, up until that time his commitment had been awesome as had all the other players on the field, we did not give in though and some strong breaks from Alistair Hewins with support from Antonio Lezzi (The Italian Stallion) saw us go deep into Wicklows 22 where we pouded their line continuously and were rewarded with a sniping try from Ciaran Williams.
The game finished as it had started with high intensity and it was a wise decision by the ref to blow up when he did, as although Alex Kirton had been playing well, I think if it had carried on for another 5 minutes he would have become very well acquainted with their number 6.
The game proves a point rugby is all about dog, we seem to have left the poodle at home and found a Rottweiler, and with at least 10 players being left at home who were all capable of playing and it some cases adding to the standards we have reached, we are moving in the right direction , lets hope over the next few weeks all players are able to give the commitment for both training and matches, to make a successful end to the season, our next game is at Birchgrove on Friday night come and support the boys we need your support, lets see if we really have learned some lessons in the last few weeks
