Lies, damn lies and statistics

Had you told Dunvant you will go into the game, and you will have 60% of the territory and 60% of the possession, and the opposition will only get into your 22 on 3 occassions as a team, score 3 tries against a team that has locked you out in the 3 previous encounters you will take that and presume you are going to win.
Unfortunately that is not the case, since although Dunvant seemed to be winning the breakdown, they were punished on 6 occassions with counter attack ball or from set piece, the Ups were clinical on the break and in 2 spells of 8 minutes and 2 minutes they scored 3 tries and 2 tries, the first spell was in the opening 10 minutes when very generous defence saw Dunvant looking at their watches being 21-3 down. Dunvant did not fold though they knuckled down, and through hard work at the break down and going through the phases drove deep into the Uplands 22 for Antonio Lezzi to score from short distance, this was converted, another Uplands try found Dunvant 26 10 down at half time, at half time the coaches gave a few pieces of advice that were ignored completely, though they did make a positional change to shore up the midfield defence.
Dunvant started off the second half at a canter and after turning down several penalty kicks scored a beautiful try from set piece when Jack Lee put Jack Thomas through a gap to canter in from the 10 yard line, the conversion put Dunvant back to within 8 points, by now Dunvant were dominating and had the momentum, with Jack Duffy imperious in the second row with his partner Matthew Dodd who was putting in a huge effort and in my opinion outplayed his opponent who is a Welsh under 18 cap, he put in some huge hits, disrupted their lineout and showed his class, Dunvant had 2 chances to put over reasonably gettable penalties, which given their momentum would have been changers, then came a crazy 2 minutes that you would have thought would have killed the game, first a kick down field found the one player you didn't want , Uplands fullback had already scored 1 blistering try in the opening salvo, picking the ball up on their 10m line, he picked up pace, and was missed by 4 tacklers to link up for a score in the corner, Dunvant at this point were still only 2 scores behind, giving our momentum this was not considered a problem, however with Dunvant pressing from the kick off the Upland hooker gathered the kick, and sold an outrageous Dummy, to sprint 40 yards up the blind and put his winger away, Dunvant now 19 points down, we did not lie down though and a drive deep into the Uplands 22 saw Ciran Williams score in the left hand corner back to 14 points deficit with 10 to go, Dunvant again went back upfield through a series of penalties from breakdown infringements, the only cards use tonight were the refs scorecard though, with 7 minutes left on the clock came an act of stupidity that threw away our momentum with a penalty 5 metres out where a try seemed to be coming but was reversed, a real turning point, Dunvant continued to press though and Uplands kicked the ball off and seemed relieved more than anything, they know they got out of jail, they are a good team, but have got a couple of games coming up in the next few weeks that will surely test them, as for the youth team, we have 1 maybe 2 games left in the season, to be arranged, so watch this space, this squad will be moving into 3rd year youth next year and with several players coming up from the under 16's and a few going away to University it is though next year could be our year, over the last 6 weeks we have improved vastly and shown a lot of maturity
