A busy afternoon at Dunvant Rugby Club with DUnvant Youth taking on local rivals South Gower in the first league encounter of the season for both. Prior to the game commencing the weather was glorious and we were in for an exciting afternoon of rugby.
Being a league encounter it was important to get off the mark and get points on the board. Zac Devey taking a shot at goal to give Dunvant the lead on 4 minutes 3 - 0 .
With both teams playing attacking rugby the game was quite evenly matched, the Dunvant forwards having the upper hand in the tight forward play. On the 16th minute strong forward driving saw Jamie Fairbairn drive get over out wide for his first try in youth rugby, the trey was converted by Zac Devey 10 - 0.
Within two minutes of Jamie's try prop forward Charlie Leyshon drove over under the posts for his second of the season, again converted by Zac Devey 17 - 0. South Gower needed to register some point and on the 25th minute of the match opted for a shot at goal 17 - 3. In some exciting open play centre Harry Jones intercepted on the halfway and cantered in under the posts for his first score of the season, again converted by Zac Devey 24 - 3.
Not wanting to throw in the towel South Gower battled hard and perhaps resting on our laurels and the lead they managed to cross the line for the last play of the first half, the try went un-converted 24 - 8 (Half Time).
The second half was a tough encounter in dreadful conditions. The rain was relentless and continued to lash down for the whole of the second half affecting handling and the quality of the play. Both teams managed to play some exciting rugby at times but the weather was the winner!!
The second half remained without any score being managed by either team - Final score 24 - 8.
Bonus point win for us to get the season under way in the league but we did seem to ease off and looked as if we were relying on the lead we had registered in the first half. It is early days in the season but we must ensure that we play with the same tempo and ruthlessness throughout the whole of the matches that we play.
