The youth took on South Gower away in the league an a really poor playing surface. The referee was a little cautious about player safety and was talking about delaying the KO or even postponing the game! With South Gower already having cancelled this fixture on 16th December we told him that we were happy to play and wanted the fixture honoured.
Having retrieved a few brushes from the changing room Alun Beven and I started to try and disburse some surface water. Having commenced doing this the home team also started to assist in making the surface safely playable.
The ground was a great leveller so muddy and sticky the game was never going to be a stand out performance.
We put lots of pressure on Gower in the first half but their defence held strong, it took us until the thirty fourth minute of the first half to get over the line with a breakaway by man of the match centre Joe Woodward, Joe's efforts converted by Scrum Half Zac Devey 0 - 7. This was the score at the half time break.
The second half was much as the first with most of the pressure being put on the South Gower line by us but their defence was strong and managed to keep us out! With time slipping away it looked as if we were going to miss out on a bonus point in this outing. From some sustained pressure from the forwards last weeks man of the match, flanker Jacob Hopkins drove over out wide in the twenty ninth minute of te half. (I am reliably informed by Iwan Buckley that it was his assist that got the score!!??).
South Gower came back strongly at us in the last five minutes of the game, we could quite easily have lost out on a winning bonus point. Our defence held strong and we managed to stop any score being registered until the final whistle - Pressure like this in the last five minutes when you are defending a bonus point is no good for the nerves!
Lets keep this momentum going in the league to hopefully set up a winner takes all against Loughor later in the season.
