RICHIE REES
Richie Rees (born May 21 1983) is a Wales International Professional Rugby Union player. A scrum-half, Richie started playing rugby aged 5 and played all his formative rugby at Dunvant R.F.C. at all levels, Mini, Junior, Youth and Seniors. Richie also played for his school sides, Dunvant Junior School and later Olchfa Comprehensive. It was obvious from the beginning that Richie had a significant talent as a rugby player. After leaving Olchfa school, Richie attended U.W.I.C.(Cardiff) where he gained a degree in sports & physical education. Richie is currently studying at Cardiff University where he is doing a post graduate degree in education.
In 2004,Richie transferred to Swansea R.F.C. for whom he made 52 appearances , also winning his Wales Under 21 cap. Richie also played 11 times for the Ospreys Regional side. In 2006 Richie joined English Premiership side London Irish making 20 appearances. In 2007 he returned to Wales when he signed for the Cardiff Blues, having impressed the Blues coaching set up with his livewire performance for London Irish in the EDF Energy Cup. From stiff early challenges and injury problems, Richie has now firmly established himself at Cardiff. In 2009/10 he has been the Blues' first choice scrum half, keeping Wales International and British Lion Gareth Cooper on the bench for most of the Blues' games.
On 18 January 2010 Richie was named in the 35 man Wales national Squad for the 2010 Six Nations tournament . Richie made his international debut against England on 6 February 2010 as a second half replacement, Gatland having preferred to use the out of form Cooper for his depth of International experience to play in the big game against England at Twickenham.
For Wales' second 6 Nations game on 13th February 2010, at home to Scotland, Gatland again picked Cooper to start. After a poor first half showing by most of the Wales team, Cooper was substituted at half time, when Richie gained his second cap and played the whole 40 minutes of the second half. In a memorable and exciting match, with lively contributions from Richie, and some accurate passing, Wales stormed back in the last 10 minutes for a breathtaking 31-24 victory.
One of Wales's brightest prospects at scrum half, Richie can hopefully look forward to many more Wales Caps. Dunvant Rugby Club are extremely proud that Richie is our first former player to win an International Cap having played through all sections of Mini, Junior, Youth and Senior Rugby at Dunvant R.F.C.
